About Surf Side
What is Surf Side?
Surf Side is our proposal for the next chapter of Hove Lagoon: a watersports, leisure and hospitality destination built around surfing, the lagoon's existing watersports, coaching, food and drink, families and community. It is a place to surf, play and connect — and you don't have to surf to belong here.
Where is Surf Side?
At Hove Lagoon, on Kingsway at the western end of the Brighton & Hove seafront.
What is being proposed?
Two surf machines on the lagoon, the continuation of wakeboarding, paddleboarding and canoeing, the introduction of wing surfing, expanded coaching, and a new two-storey clubhouse with changing facilities, retail, a café, bar and restaurant and a first-floor balcony overlooking the water. All of this is proposed and subject to planning.
The water
What are the surf machines?
Surf machines pump a continuous sheet of water over a shaped surface to create a standing wave you can ride again and again. The proposal is for two FlowRider® Double machines on the lagoon.
Can beginners surf?
Yes. A consistent, repeatable wave is one of the best places to learn. Coaching will be designed for first-timers as well as experienced riders.
Can children surf?
Yes — introducing young people to surfing is central to what we want to do. Children's coaching is planned from around six years old, subject to final operating requirements, safety requirements and individual ability.
What age will children's coaching start?
Our intention is from approximately six years old. The final minimum age will depend on operating and safety requirements and will be confirmed before opening.
Will wakeboarding continue?
Yes. Wakeboarding is part of the Hove Lagoon story and remains part of our plans.
Will paddleboarding continue?
Yes. Stand-up paddleboarding remains part of our plans for the lagoon.
Will canoeing continue?
Yes. Canoeing remains part of our plans for the lagoon.
What is wing surfing?
Wing surfing combines a handheld inflatable wing with a surfboard, using the wind to glide across the water. It is a new activity we intend to introduce at Hove Lagoon, with coached sessions.
Visiting
Do I have to surf to visit?
No. You don't have to surf to love Surf Side. Come for coffee, lunch, a drink at sunset, to watch the surfing or to meet friends.
Will there be a restaurant?
The proposed clubhouse includes a café, bar and restaurant with views across the lagoon. Menus and opening hours will be announced later.
Can I just come for coffee?
That's exactly the idea. The clubhouse is designed to be somewhere people visit whether or not they get wet.
Membership
Will there be memberships?
Yes, membership is planned to be a big part of Surf Side. Details, benefits and pricing will be announced later.
How do I become a founding member?
Register your interest on our Join the first wave page. We'll contact registered people first when membership opportunities are released.
Does registering guarantee membership?
No. Registering your interest does not commit you to purchasing a membership and does not guarantee a membership place. Initial places are expected to be released in stages. Full availability, pricing and terms will be announced later.
The project
When will Surf Side open?
We haven't announced an opening date. The project is still being developed and is subject to planning. Register for updates and we'll let you know as soon as we can.
Has planning permission been granted?
No — not yet. Surf Side is a proposal and is subject to planning. We'll share updates on the project page and in our news.
How many jobs could be created?
The project is expected to create at least 50 new local jobs across hospitality, watersports, coaching, retail, operations, maintenance, events and management.
